Linda’s Story: Early Detection Can Be Life Saving
“If you have symptoms like palpitations, shortness of breath or chest discomfort, speak to your GP – early detection can be lifesaving.”
It’s Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week this week, and our Founder & CEO, Dr. Linda Worrall-Carter, is sharing her personal journey with heart disease following a recent echo (heart ultrasound).
“This week always takes me back to when I started experiencing palpitations during my first pregnancy. At first, I thought it was just really tired, but when it persisted my GP sent me for an echo.
Many people don’t realise that pregnancy is often referred to as a “stress test” for the heart – as your blood volume almost doubles, so if there’s an underlying issue, it often shows up at this time.
My echo (ultrasound of the heart) revealed a prolapsed mitral valve. I was monitored during my pregnancy and had important follow up. The same happened with my second child, and since then, I’ve had annual check-ups ever since.
Here’s a snapshot from one of my annual echos – thankfully, my valve remains stable.”
This is such an important reminder that regular monitoring and follow-up care can make all the difference. If you have symptoms like palpitations, shortness of breath or chest discomfort, speak to your GP – early detection can be lifesaving.
Let Dr. Linda’s story serve as a reminder that regular heart checkups are essential for early detection and better outcomes. Knowing your family history and staying vigilant about your heart health can make all the difference.
