Tabitha’s Story – Heart Block

Tabitha’s Story – Heart Block

Tabitha, a 34-year-old mother of two young children, had her life turned upside down when she was diagnosed with AV block Mobitz type II. The diagnosis came after she experienced a frightening episode of passing out, resulting in smashed teeth and an ambulance ride due to persistent bradycardia (VERY slow heart rate). The incident led to Tabitha receiving two fake teeth and a pacemaker, a shocking turn of events for someone so young and seemingly healthy.

Reflecting on her journey, Tabitha realises that she may have overlooked subtle signs that something was amiss. Episodes of breathlessness, occasional lightheadedness, poor sleep, and the familiar sensation of a fading black tunnel accompanied by pre-syncope (fainting) were likely indicators of her condition. Looking back, she suspects that her heart block can be traced back to a previous bout of an extremely fast heart rate called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and the corrective surgery she underwent at 18. Additionally, a severe viral infection at the age of 32 further damaged her heart’s electronic function.

Tabitha’s experience taught her that not all pacemakers are created equal. Initially, her low blood pressure combined with the algorithm of her first pacemaker didn’t provide an optimal fit, resulting in persistent fatigue and frequent episodes of fainting. However, with the insertion of her second pacemaker, her life took a positive turn. Since that day, Tabitha has enjoyed perfect heart health, free from the debilitating symptoms that once plagued her.

Two key lessons stand out from Tabitha’s journey. Firstly, she emphasises the importance of tuning in to one’s body and recognising the subtle clues it provides. As women, who often prioritise caring for others, it’s crucial to prioritise our own well-being, especially when it comes to heart health. Secondly, Tabitha emphasises the need to be an assertive advocate for oneself. Open communication is essential, particularly when something doesn’t feel right or when the proposed solution doesn’t seem like the perfect fit. Tabitha is grateful for her second pacemaker, as it not only restored her confidence but also allowed her to regain trust in her own body.
