Professor Derek Chew (MBBS, MPH, PhD, FRACP, FACC, FESC, FCSANZ) is an interventional cardiologist, clinical trialist and health systems researcher whose career has centred on the translation of cardiovascular evidence into measurable population outcomes. He holds concurrent appointments as Chief Scientific and Medical Officer of the National Heart Foundation of Australia and as Professor and Service Director of MonashHeart and the Victorian Heart Hospital, Monash Health — Australia’s first dedicated cardiac hospital. He is Director of Cardiac Informatics at the Victorian Heart Institute and an Adjunct Professor at Monash University’s School of Public Health and Precision Medicine.

Trained in interventional cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic and in quantitative methods at the Harvard School of Public Health, he completed his PhD at Flinders University examining the gaps in acute coronary syndrome care across Australia. He previously served as Commissioner and Chief Executive of the Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Health, Government of South Australia, and as Network Director of Cardiology at the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network.

His research addresses the evidence-to-practice gap in acute coronary syndromes, high-sensitivity troponin diagnostics, AI-assisted cardiac decision support, cardiovascular risk prediction and national registry-based outcomes measurement. He chairs the AIHW Cardiovascular Diseases Expert Advisory Group and holds the Vice-Presidency of the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology. His work has generated more than 350 peer-reviewed publications (h-index 62).
